I am currently a Private Client Paralegal working at Goughs Solicitors as a Solicitor Apprentice. I started with the firm in September 2022 and have been here ever since.
A bit about me...
I am currently a Trainee Paralegal working at Goughs Solicitors as a Solicitor Apprentice. I work in the Private Client Department in our Melksham office. The type of work that I do covers Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Deputyships, Estate Administration, Probate and Trusts.
I applied for the solicitor apprenticeship programme at Goughs in 2022. Growing up locally, I had always been aware of the firm, and its Dementia Friends status particularly resonated with me, as dementia is a subject close to home. I was keen to join a firm whose values genuinely reflect care, understanding and support for clients and their families. I was also looking for a role that was both challenging and client-facing, so I was delighted to be offered the opportunity at Goughs, especially given the firm’s breadth of expertise across a wide range of specialisms.
Outside of work, I love performing in Musical Theatre and Amateaur Dramatics. I love to sing, especially jazz and swing. Fun fact, I was invited to the House of Commons for my excellence in Musical Theatre with Stagecoach Performing Arts School.
I also love reading! I love keeping up to date with my reads on Good Reads as well as checking out other books that my friends are reading. If you have it, happy to connect!
A bit more about me
What's the most enjoyable thing about your work?
The challenges that it brings. Every day is different and I am learning and meeting new people every day. It helps me with my confidence through talking to colleagues, clients and third parties either on the phone or in person. I also love that I feel like I am really growing up! I started Goughs at 19 (basically still a child) and now, at 22 nearly 23, I feel like I have really matured and found out who I am as a person. I really thank the friends and colleagues I have met along the way who have supported me on that journey. I am also grateful that I love the work that Private Client entails.
What made you join WMB and how do you plan to make the most of the network?
For me, it is about meeting new people, making new contacts and new relationships. It doesn't matter if it doesn't lead to referrals as I see this as a new opportunity to learn and grow and improve my networking skills and confidence. I take this as a new opportunity to blossom especially around other women who I would imagine will make me feel empowered. But in truth, I was asked to join by our marketing team as our previous member had to sadly leave as her caseload grew significantly after becoming qualified. At the moment, I have the time to work on my networking as I am a trainee so I am taking this opportunity and making the most of it!
What do you do at week-ends?
Sing (probably too much!) Perform in musicals. Go to the gym. Read my book. Have a nice lie in. See my boyfriend and my friends and family! Normally have to do a bit of studying, but the best weekends are where I can relax and have fun without needing to do an essay!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what 2 luxury items would you take?
This is a hard one, as I am definitely an over-packer. I fear that I would become bored and in need of some entertainment so probably a really good book that is also chunky! My phone to call for help??? And take photos of this beautiful deserted island? But, I do fear I would need my inhaler as I am asthmatic and sun cream/moisturiser for my dry skin (boring answers I know!) But, I definitely would be taking my luggage with me before becoming stranded and I always carry everything so I think I would be okay!
What book are you currently reading?
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty, I have only just started this but just finished The Wedding People by Alison Espach. Probably one of my new favourite books.
What book(s) would you recommend?
The Wedding People as mentioned, The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald and I really like Freida McFadden's books too, especially The Housemaid and The Inmate.
Who's your personal hero and why?
My mother. She is a hard-working and determined lady. Not only is she a nurse who looks after others, but she is the best parent I could ask for. She has gone through so much, and despite this, always has a smile on her face and is so loving and beautiful on the inside and out. I am lucky to have a mother and a best friend in one.
What was your first ever job?
I was a pot-washer at the Bridge Tea Rooms in Bradford on Avon. Not glamourous at all!
Where is your favourite place in the world and why?
Scotland or Greece. Very different places, but places where I feel completely relaxed and happy. If I suffer from a moment of anxiety, I picture my happy place at Inverbeg in Scotland on Loch Lomond and I will already feel more calm. The people in Rhodes, Greece and Scotland are the nicest people I have met. Would definitely recommend visiting.
