Finding Your Business Story

by Donna Airey on 7th Aug 2025

Over the summer, I’ve been speaking to small business owners and service providers about something we rarely make time for — taking a step back and reflecting on what our businesses are really telling us.

PR is often seen as something for big launches or award wins. But in reality, some of the most compelling stories come from the patterns and moments that show up in the day-to-day. That’s where the signals live. And when you notice them, you start to see how visibility might be more within reach than you thought.

This article is a follow-on from my recent talks for Women Mean Biz. If you're ready to take stock, refocus, and use what you already know to shape your messaging or PR, this is for you.

You already have insights

If you’ve ever said:

  • “All my new clients came through Instagram this month”
  • “That freebie worked better than expected”
  • “More people are asking about X lately”

Then you already have the beginnings of a data story.

This isn't about spreadsheets or deep analytics. It's about the information your business gives you every day. When you notice it, interpret it, and act on it, you’ve already started the process of data storytelling.

The question is not whether there’s data in your business. It’s whether you’ve taken time to listen to what it’s telling you.

Start with confidence

Before any communications strategy or PR campaign, there needs to be clarity and confidence in what’s already working.

That’s why I created a tool called The Story in Your Stats. It’s a simple check-in to help you reconnect with your progress, reflect on your recent work and begin to spot stories or themes that could feed into future content or PR opportunities.

You don’t need to have big goals or a launch plan in place. This is about recognising your own momentum and using that as a starting point.

You can download the free workbook and read more about how it works here:

Join a working session

If you’d like to go through the workbook with a bit of structure and support, I’m running a live virtual session on Tuesday 24th September 2025 at 10am BST.

You’ll have time to reflect, ask questions, and explore the patterns you’re noticing. You’ll also start to think about how those insights could shape your messaging, your content, or even a future PR story.

It’s free to attend and open to anyone who’s downloaded the workbook and wants some encouragement to get started, just opt in when downloading and I’ll share the access link.

A final note

You don’t need to reinvent your business to be visible. Often, the stories that connect with others are already there. They just need a moment of attention.

Sometimes, visibility starts not with a bold statement, but with noticing what is quietly working well — and having the confidence to share it.
