Creating a one page plan for your business

by Ros Conkie on 17th May 2023

What’s the best way to create a simple, useful plan for my business?

This is the question many business owners ask themselves. With things constantly changing and evolving, combined with a busy work schedule, the idea of taking time to plan out your business strategy can be a daunting one. But it doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. All you need is a prioritised, one-page action plan. Let’s look at why you need one, and how to get started.

Why do I need a plan?

A plan - even a simple, one-page one, provides clarity and focus by condensing your business strategy into a concise, prioritised list of tasks. The process of creating a plan helps you articulate your goals, target audience, value proposition, and key strategies in a way that is easy to understand and communicate to your customers and other people in your business. It also forces you to think strategically about your business. By outlining your key strategies and priorities, you can make more effective decisions and allocate resources wisely. A marketing plan for a small business should be flexible and adaptable, allowing you to quickly adjust your strategies and tactics as your business and your market evolve.

What to Include in Your One-Page Plan:

Your Ideal Customer Persona:

Start by developing a detailed customer persona that represents your ideal target audience. Understand their needs, preferences, pain points, questions and motivations. By creating a clear picture of your customers, you can tailor your marketing strategies and messages to resonate with them effectively.

Get Clear on Your Value Proposition:

Define your unique Value Proposition that highlights the specific benefits and solutions your business offers to your target audience. Clearly articulate the problems you solve and the value you provide. A strong value proposition is more than just a list of your services or packages: it’s the reason WHY someone will want to buy them.

Set SMART Objectives:

Establish specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives for your marketing efforts. These objectives should align with your overall business goals and provide a clear roadmap for success. Setting SMART objectives helps you stay focused, track progress, and make informed decisions along the way.

Map Out Your Buyer Journey:

Understand the various stages of your buyer's decision-making process from awareness to first sale and beyond. Identify the touchpoints and interactions your customers have with your business at each stage. By mapping out your buyer’s journey, you can create tailored marketing strategies and content that address their needs and guide them towards becoming a customer.

Prioritise Your Marketing Tasks:

Once you have a “wish list” of marketing tasks and activities, prioritise them into the order they need to be executed to achieve your objectives. This is your one-page plan, and it acts as your roadmap, providing clarity on what needs to be done and the order of priority. By focusing on the top task on your list, you maximise your productivity and ensure you’re consistently making progress.
